POETRY

POETRY
Convenor Linda Blunt  lmargaretblunt@aol.com
Meetings are held on the third Monday of the month from 2.00 - 4.00pm.
The poet to be studied at a particular meeting is chosen, following group discussion, a couple of months in advance and at the same time one member volunteers to take the lead. At the meeting the leader gives all those present information about the life of the poet and then reads a poem or two to the others. All members attending the meeting are expected to have done some preparatory work themselves and to have come to the meeting prepared to read out loud some poems that they have selected in advance and to take part in discussions about the poems. The meetings are lively and enjoyable and include a tea break when general chat takes place.

Final Report from Vera Easton Convenor of Poetry 1 that has closed down.
After 27 years of continuous monthly operation with the same convenor Poetry Reading Group 1 is closing down at the end of the year.
In 1988 in the very early days of Monmouth U3A someone said it would be niice to start a poetry reading group and Vera Easton, one of the founder members, anxious not to see momentum lost in the new organisation, rashly took on the role of convenor. The first meeting was in January 1989 and was the first special interest group to meet in a private house and from the outset proved popular. There was soon a permanent waiting list and as general membership increased it became necessary to start a second Poetry Reading Group.
It has been my pleasure and privilege to convene Group1 from the outset and I would here like to pay tribute to my husband, Geoffrey, for his patient help all these years in moving furniture and acting as tea -boy as well as playing his full part in studying the poets.
As a group we like to think we fulfil the stated aims of a U3A. We learn together, we laugh together, at times we mourn together the loss through incapacity (and sometimes worse) of much loved and respected members. Always we have in mind the value of shared knowledge and experience and the satisfaction that comes from exploring new worlds.
Sadly, for the last year or so and even with a membership of over 500 it has proved difficult to recruit the necessary dozen or so of committed and loyal members As convenor (now aged 91) I am forced to the conclusion that the interests of our current Monmouth membership now lie elsewhere. and the group is therefore closing down at he end of the year.
At a time when interest in poets and poetry is on the increase nationally through the medium of radio, festivals and workshops let us hope that someone from the new membership of Monmouth U3A will have the courage to come forward and start a new group to cover this most desirable of the liberal arts.
